Northern Lights Feminized Growing Information

Northern Lights is one of the most commonly smoked cannabis strains around the globe and is loved by both beginner and experienced growers. This strain will leave you deeply relaxed, perfect after the end of a long day!

The strain gets its name from the variety of colours in its buds, from greens, purples, and blues. It was originally a pure indica strain but after years of being cross-bred, it now has around 10% sativa in it.

Northern Lights is the result of mixing two strong landrace strains: Afghani indica and Thai sativa. Origins are not entirely 100% known, although it is said to have been born in Washington state and later rejuvenated in the Netherlands in around 1985. Northern Lights has produced further popular strains such as Shiva Skunk and Super Silver Haze.

  • The aroma of Northern Lights is as one might imagine, a woody and sweet piney scent. The aroma is a pleasant one and very earthy, with hints of citrus.
  • Taste-wise, the piney and earthy flavour is apparent, which then leads onto a much sweeter, candy-like taste. Hints of sweet lemon, pine and earthy flavours add to the overall subtle taste, that leaves you wanting more.
  • The buds of Northern Lights are dense, packed in closely to one another, with it’s suger leaves protruding a little outwards. It has a deep green colour, with pistils that are shades of orange, blue, purple, and green.

Effects and Usage

  • This strain will give you a nice balanced high that is deeply relaxing but will not leave you completely glued to the coach either. Users will feel a sense of dreamy euphoria, and an easy bliss feeling, making it the perfect end of the day strain.
  • The body high that you will experience with Northern Lights can help with issues like chronic pain, arthritis, and migraines. Its gentle uplifting and relaxation sensations can also help with stress or to balance negative moods.
  • Dry mouth & dry eyes are adverse effects of this strain (as most cannabis strains) and can be helped by drinking plenty of water and using hydrating eye drops.

Growing

  • Northern Lights is a popular strain to grow as it is pretty easy to cultivate, plus it is also quite resistant to disease, pests, and bugs. It grows to a medium height and is great for both indoor and outdoor grows.

Best Climate

  • Northern Lights loves a moderately warm, sunny environment, around 21 to 29 degrees Celsius, and can get up to 220cm when grown outdoors. In a grow room, do not go over 29 degrees Celsius, as this strain will start to struggle, unless you add some more CO2 to the indoor environment. Lower temperatures right at the end of flowering will help produce lots of trichomes, for a potent and rich bud.
  • During the seeding and vegetative stage, keep your relative humidity (RH) your at least 60%, reducing this by 5% each week during the flowering stage, until it reaches around 40-45% right at the end of flowering.
  • Northern Lights is great for indoor and outdoor grows, and an easy one for beginner growers to start with. It can also be more resistant to pests, disease, and bud rot  than other strains. This strain is easy to maintain and quite compact when grown indoors, but with a good amount of yield

Flowering, Yield and Harvest

  • Northern Lights flowers relatively quickly in around 7 to 9 weeks. You can get around 575 to 625 grams per plant for an outdoor grow, or 500 to 550 grams per square metre indoors.
  • Harvest in the Southern hemisphere should be ready around mid-April and by mid-October in the Northern hemisphere.
  • Check out our Aussie grow calendar for when to harvest outdoors in Australia.

Feeding

  • All Cannabis strains, require a full spectrum nutrient complete with the macro nutrients such as Nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium and the secondary nutrients and micronutrients like, calcium, sulphur, hydrogen, magnesium, manganese, carbon, iron, zinc etc.
  • This strain loves its food! Make sure it has all the nutrients it needs, particularly in the flowering stage, to help the buds become dense. Using soil is slightly more forgiving if you overdo it with the nutrients. If you are using a good quality soil, it will have a lot of nutrients in there already, so there is no need to add any during the seedling stage.
  • During the vegetative phase you will need to give your plant twice as much nitrogen as phosphorus, and three times more nitrogen than potassium. The nutrient ratios to look for on the bottle will be either 6-3-2 or 18-9-6. You should also add in some sulphur, magnesium, and calcium.
  • During the flowering stage, change the ratio so you are using up to three times more phosphorus than nitrogen and potassium. Also continue to add in secondary nutrients such as iron, copper, and manganese.  Make sure to use orgnanic Bud Burst during flowering all the way as this will ensure a smooth finish with no chemical taste.   Amazing stuff!
  • For organic grows, we recommend Aptus Baseboost organic nutrient   with coco/perlite 70/30 ratio.   This stuff is highly concentrated so a little goes a long way making it great value.     Simply add the pellets to the coco as per the instructions and it will completely transform any inert growing medium into a powerful full spectrum grow media..

Why buy ‘Feminized’ Seeds

  • Marijuana plants are either male or female.   The male flower produces sacs or pollen designed to fertilize the female flower which produces white pistols designed to absorb the pollen.   If no male plants are present in the growing area, than the female plant will just grow larger and larger flowers in search of pollen.   These flowers are the cannabis buds that we all know and love.   The male plants hold only minuscule amount of THC, while the female flowers are oozing with THC crystals (the good stuff).   For this reason, marijuana growers are seeking only female plants in the grow room (unless they want alot of seedy buds).Feminsed seeds have been cultivated in a precise way so that the seed is genetically more likely to produce a female plant.   Autoflower seeds automatically transition from the vegetative phase to the flowering stage without you needing to adjust their light exposure.   Fore more detailed growing information, see our in depth grow guide.
